Chain Lock and Snubber Attachment Methods for Anchor Chains

There are several common ways to attach a snubber to an anchor chain, including using a gripping hitch, a soft shackle, or a chain hook. For many boaters seeking a faster, simpler method, the chain hook is a popular choice. Chain hooks used in anchoring are largely adapted from industrial lifting hooks, which are designed to shorten chains during lifting operations.

Marine chain hooks, typically made from stainless steel or galvanized coatings, closely resemble their industrial counterparts but are specifically sized for marine chain dimensions. It is important to select the correct hook size for your chain, as a hook that is too large may slip off easily, while a hook that is too small can be difficult to attach securely.

A notable limitation of most chain hooks is that they typically need to be attached to rode that has already passed beyond the bow roller and is well clear of the pulpit. Some hooks come with latches that offer near 100% security, but these often require two hands to engage or release. Optimal designs allow one-handed attachment, freeing the other hand to safely hold the boat.

Addressing these challenges, Viking introduces its innovative chain lock design, offering quick one-hand mounting and dismounting combined with full security on the chain. This versatile chain lock fits both 8 mm and 10 mm chains and is crafted from high tensile Hardox 450 steel with stainless steel LFR components, matching the quality and durability of Viking anchors.

Additionally, the chain lock features a thick zinc coating to ensure long-lasting corrosion resistance in marine environments. For anchoring in severe weather conditions, using a bridle is recommended to further enhance safety and load distribution.
